Memory of Charley Bilik

Coach Bilik, advanced math and geometry teacher, witty and inspiring and my all-time favorite instructor, by a mile.  Every day in his math class, I convulsed with deep, belly- laughs.  He had pet names for every person--silly or ironic names, and not necessarily politically correct.  He jumped high up and down to erase the blackboard.  On the daily attendance sheet, he pretended to write, "Teacher:  'the best', Class:  'the worst.'"  He informed us that his "kits" graded our tests by throwing them on the stairs.  The ones landing on the highest step got the A's, and so on to the bottom step, the U's.  Yet, in the midst of this hilarity, he superbly taught us geometry.  He sure knew how to get and keep our attention.

Each day, near the end of the hour, he switched gears.  Looking sincerely and intently at the class, he offered, "Remember, if you have any troubles, griefs, heartaches or sorrows, come see me, the Old Master--it's free."

I never took him up on it and wonder if anyone did.

Sounds like those who didn't have Coach Bilik
for a class missed something great. Thanks for
memorializing this guy. You did him a service.
